looking back and moving forward

As I look at all the beautiful couples below and think back over the past six years, I have so many wonderful memories. I have been so overwhelmingly blessed to be part of all of their weddings – some family, some friends, some strangers who I now call friends. Taking the leap to start my photography business was so scary, but it was one of the best things I ever did. I set out to do something and I did it. I wanted to shoot weddings and I did. Lots of them. All along, I have said that I truly believe God brought each and every couple my way and I’m so thankful for that, because I have worked with some of the most special, kind, thoughtful, beautiful people in this world.

Over the past couple of years, though, the business has slowed way down for me and I have spent a lot of time searching and praying and asking God why. This year, I have put a lot of my focus on my family and spending time with my kids, who really took a backseat more often than I’d like to admit because of all the time devoted to editing photos. I have felt for a while now that this little business of mine may have run its course. This post has been such a long time coming, so here it is … I am officially stepping back from A Picture’s Worth photography. I’m embracing my kids, my husband and our life as it is right now and turning my attention to other things. There will always be a love of photographing weddings and I’m leaving that little place in my heart open to the possibility of doing this again someday, but I truly believe this is the right decision for me at this time.

THANK YOU so much to all of my wedding couples. Thank you for choosing me to capture your most important day. And to the dozens of families whose pictures I took along the way, too. It’s been such fun getting to know all of you. THANK YOU all from the bottom of my heart.

I will be keeping this blog up indefinitely since so many couples’/families’ pictures are here, so feel free to browse through all the posts. I may check in every once in a while, so keep me on your RSS feeds and Google Readers just in case. :)

Happy New Year!

I was so busy last month that I didn’t get a chance to celebrate. June 19, 2009 marked the five year anniversary of the very first wedding I ever photographed. It was for my dear friend Heidi and I wasn’t the primary photographer. I just followed her around for the day and took lots of candids, which is what I loved. I will always say that it’s all Heidi’s fault that I got into wedding photography. I helped design her wedding invitations and programs and we had so much fun dress shopping and taking engagement pictures of her and Kyle. I got so excited for her wedding, to see if this was actually something I would like doing. And it was a wonderful day. She was a beautiful bride, just as I knew she would be. I learned a lot that day. The photographer had more of a traditional style and she did lots and lots of poses and brought along lists and clippings from magazines that she used for inspiration. I knew right from the start that I didn’t want to be that kind of photographer. The images that always caught my eye in all those bridal magazines were the candids, those real moments that the photographer captured when the couple didn’t even know it and that’s what I was looking for all day. And that’s what I continue to look for in my work now. Those sweet moments that I try to be all sneaky and stealthy and capture without anyone noticing I’m there.

When I showed Heidi the pictures I took, she really liked them and she (along with a few others) encouraged me to start my business. So I took a leap of faith and went for it. Putting myself out there was so scary, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

It’s all your fault, Heidi!

Here are some of my favorites from their wedding. (and honestly, I was still learning so much about my camera and I had no clue what I was doing, but I loved the moments that I captured. even if they were a little out of focus and not properly exposed.) ;)

It will either be at the State Park or Tunnel Park. It’s only a few weeks away, so call (616.822.7586) or email to get on the schedule.

I’m really excited to visit some friends in Naperville, Illinois at the end of this month. On our last day there, I am taking some family pictures for my friend Heather at the Riverwalk in Naperville and I am available to do a couple more sessions that morning before we head back to Michigan.

I will be doing a photo session in St. Joe on October 5th and I’d like to schedule 2 – 3 more while I’m in town that day. Please contact me if you’re interested in family, senior or engagement pictures. Hopefully the fall colors will be beautiful that weekend.

elizabeth anne designs • library

Came across Elizabeth Anne Designs through Aletha’s Pearls Events blog. They have just launched this wonderful library resource for brides listing tons of vendors across the country. Ami and Rebekah were kind enough to list me among the michigan photographers so I wanted to return the favor here on my blog. They also have a new review site, where clients can comment on the services of their vendors. If you’re an APW bride, feel free to visit their site and leave me some love. ;)

happy 4th of July. I’m outta here!

I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July. I’m off for a few days with the girls to recuperate from my busy May/June, but I will return to work on July 10th. Please feel free to email me or call 616.822.7586 and leave a voicemail while I’m gone. I’ll get back to you on Thursday!

I just have to say that the weddings I have been a part of this year so far have been so wonderful. I’m getting so excited for 2009 weddings already and I’m not even through 2008 yet! Now is the best time to book for your ’09 wedding, by the way, especially if your date is in June because my June always fills up pretty far in advance. And don’t forget about Valentine’s Day 2009 being on a Saturday. That will be a hot date, too.

Ok, I’m off. Be back Thursday. :)

the new blog

I’m so excited to welcome you to my brand spankin’ new blog! I’ve worked hard on it over the past couple weeks and, though there are still a few things I need to do to get all the old posts working correctly, I wanted to get it launched in time for my wedding season, which starts this weekend with my cousin Paul’s May 31st wedding in Burlington, Kentucky! :) So look for some updates early next week. Enjoy!!!

september 6th • now available

My wedding scheduled for September 6, 2008 has been cancelled. So …

SEPTEMBER 6, 2008 is AVAILABLE

I have turned a few couples away who inquired about this date and have now booked other photographers. :( If you are getting married on September 6th of this year, please contact me. I would like to fill this date, so I am offering the same pricing the first couple booked at (2007 pricing).

Thanks! Hope to be part of your September 6th wedding! :)

only a few more spots for 2008

Went through my calendar today updating things and I am almost completely booked for the year already! This is the fastest I have filled the calendar yet, which is exciting, but it means that I can’t photograph many more of your weddings and I’ve had to turn some people away because I’m already booked for their dates. :(

I still have some dates open in August and September, so if you are getting married in either of those months and would like me to be your photographer, please contact me as soon as you can to reserve your date.

Also, for those of you getting married in 2009, the calendar is open and I am now accepting commissions for 2009 dates. I book anywhere from 6 months to a year or more in advance so don’t hesitate to reserve your date now. And if you book your wedding photography now, you will lock in current 2008 pricing.
